It will be a great time.  Hope to see you there.  Check out the schedule.

We hope you all had a happy Groundhog Day last week.  In case you missed it, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, which means 6 more weeks of winter.  But you have to remember that Phil is just one groundhog.

Also, tomorrow (February 8) is Fastnacht Day, so go get some fastnachts tonight.

Check out the schedule for the Elk Toss.  We hope you can make it.

2/1/05
Planning for the Elk Toss is making serious progress.  We're expecting a big turnout.  One unfortunate note: the Winter Music Festival at the Pine Barn Inn has been postponed.  On the other hand, that will give us more time for the tour of Danville.

Check out the schedule, especially a few days before February 26 when we make things final.

1/18/05
First off, we've determined who posted the Elk Toss info on the sports message board (see 12/14/04 news update).  He has been dealt with appropriately.

Secondly, the Elk Toss is approaching quickly.  Once again, we've scheduled our events the same day as the winter music festival (POSTPONED) at the Pine Barn Inn (another reason to book a room there).  Several DGS members will be performing there, including Van Wagner and Slimfit.  The schedule for the Elk Toss and DGS Winter Festival is shaping up.  Check out the schedule or risk ridicule.

12/14/04
The Elk Toss was discussed on a sports message board on the web.  We are as surprised as you are, and we're going to find out who is responsible.

12/9/2004
Planning for the 2005 Elk Toss is underway.  More details and a preliminary schedule can be found here.

Much has happened since the last news update...Most notably, Van and Tamara had a baby boy, Luke Cuffin.

The DGS helped answer phones at the
Geisinger Children's Miracle Network Telethon in early June.  We worked the 1am to 3am shift, so our part wasn't on television, but we had our Lederhosen on anyway, and had a good time for a great cause.

Also, the log raft project was a complete success.  Thanks to everyone who believed in us as well as everyon who doubted us.  More info about the log raft can be found on the log raft website, including links to the a book of log raft pictures that is now online.

And don't forget, the 2005 Elk Toss and Charity Auction will be held on February 26 in or near Danville. More details will be coming soon.

4/19/04
We are already working on the planning for our log raft adventure that will take place in conjunction with the Danville Iron Heritage Festival in July.  Click here for more information about the log raft.

4/09/04
We are booked to help answer phones at the Geisinger Children's Miracle Network Telethon.

The DGS also has recently sent letters to all the municipalities in Montour County asking for their elected officials to support the creation of a Montour County Recreation Commission. It appears that there is not enough support for something that would positively affect the community, and the Rec Commission will not be created at this time.

NOTE: the municipalities changed their position on the Rec Commission and it has been formed.  Hooray.

3/25/04
The Danville German Society T-Shirts are ready. More details and ordering information can be found here. Shirts are $10/each if you get them directly from us and $12 if you buy them online with shipping.

Results and Pictures from the Elk Toss can be found here.

Email us if you are interested in helping to answer phones at the Childrens' Miracle Network Telethon at Geisinger in Danville on the weekend of June 5-6. We are tentatively scheduled for 1:00am to 3:00am (Early Sunday morning). We plan to meet up on Saturday night in Danville before going to Geisinger.

The 2004 Winter Festival, Elk Toss, and Charity Auction was the biggest and most successful ever.  Thanks to everyone who helped us raise over $600 for various charities..

Most of the money is going to the Good Samaritan Fund of Danville, but we also are giving to the Thomas Beaver Free Library in Danville.  Additional money went to help pay for a student from Pine Grove Area High School to go on a whale watching field trip.  Some of the money donated will be used to make DGS t-shirts, and the proceeds from the shirts will return to the community, as always.

Cans were collected to donate to the Danville-Riverside Food Bank.  Although
the number of DGS members that donated cans was quite disappointing, those who did bring cans brought a lot and made up for the others.

Results and pictures will be coming soon.

12/4/03
The Annual Winter Festival, Elk Toss, and Charity Auction will be held February 28th, 2004, in and around Danville, PA.  Information can be found here.  Beware, it will be huge this year.

11/17/03
Man, it has been a while since we gave a DGS update.  Well, here it is...

The Danville German Society is still in existence.  In fact, once again, we are stronger than ever, with more members than the last time we counted.

Over July 4th weekend, the Danville German Society partnered with the Montour-Northumberland River Runner Association to paddle about 48 miles from Nanticoke to Danville.  Thirteen people survived the trip.

In July, we scraped together a few bucks and bought a CD player and headphones to create a music listening room at the Priestley Forsyth Memorial Library in Northumberland, PA.  More information can be found here.

On October 30, the DGS marched in the Danville Halloween Parade.  Although only 4 members marched, we still managed to win First Place in the Novelty Group category (a $50 award).  Even better than the parade was what happened as we were waiting in the staging area.  We saw the Aurora Borealis (northern lights).  It was a special night in Danville.  But any time the DGS is parading is a special night.

And just in case you are wondering, the Elk Toss will be happening in January or February.  We are working out the preliminary details as you read this.   More details will come soon.

Good news!  The Danville German society has received substantial reports from field representatives that this years winter festival and Elk Toss semi-finals will have a substantial turn out!   Preliminary indications shows as many as 3,476 people planning on attending the festivities around the Danville area on Feb. 22nd.  Click here for listing of events for Feb. 22nd.

Also the officers have decided that this years fundraiser will benefit the Women's Center of Bloomsburg PA.  The Women's Center, Inc. in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania is a non-profit organization that was formed in 1974 and incorporated in 1976. The Center serves the residents of Columbia and Montour counties.  Please help us raise as much as possible for this great cause!  You can do this by entering our various competitions Feb. 22nd, and by participating in the auction.  Please bring ANYTHING you can donate to this years auction!  Also, feel free to dress up in your best PA German outfit!  See you Feb 22nd!

It has been a long time since updating the DGS webpage and we apologize for that.  The DGS is as strong as ever and we're working on another Elk Toss and Winter Festival which will occur on February 22nd.  Click here for more details and the ever changing schedule of events.  Last winter's Elk Toss was a success.  We raised $250 for the Danville SPCA.  Results of the competitions can be found here.

01/09/02
Happy New Year.  The DGS is holding an Elk Toss and Winter Festival on January 26th in Riverside at Stinger's.  More info can be found here.  We're also planning another canoe trip for mid-May.

10/18/01
It has been a while since we have posted any news on the website.  The DGS is still alive and well, although we will not be marching in the Halloween Parade this year.  We want to give other organizations a chance to win awards.  We do have some new pictures from July's Iron Heritage Festival, which was a huge success for the DGS and Danville itself.  We're still waiting on hearing from PENNDOT about the Adopt-a-Highway sign.

6/29/01
The Iron Heritage Festival is less than a month away!  If you are interested in helping with the parade on Thursday night the 19th or would like to come to Danville for the Festival, please email us for details.  The section of Route 54 between I-80 and Mill Street has been adopted by the DGS through PENNDOT and a signs should be coming soon.

5/13/01
The Danville German Society held a canoeing trip on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River and traced the route of the loggers of the past and celebrated the legacy of the loggers with lager. For pictures, click here.

ALSO!!! January 20th, 2001. The Danville German Society held its 62nd Annual Pork and Sauerkraut Eat-a-Thon at the Jerseytown Schoolhouse.  There was great food, live music, and as always, the ELKTOSS semi-finals!  The event benefitted the
Danville SPCA.  All of our leftover food went to the Gatehouse Shelter in Danville.

The Elk Toss was a success (results and pictures) with a winning toss of 35'1" by Kevin Mitchell (Drums, PA).  He will advance to the finals in Benezette later this spring.

10/27/00
The 2000 Danville Halloween Parade was a very special one for the DGS.  The six members that
marched were awarded First Place in the Judges Awards category for our float and performance.  We
were also featured in a newspaper article in the Danville News.  The prize money, as always, will be put
back into the community in some way.  Click here to read the article and see pictures from the parade.
On the Saturday after the Parade, Van and Tamara got married.  Coincidence, we think not.
