Danville German Society Elk
Toss, Winter Festival, and Auction
Rules for Events (updated
February 17, 2008)
Entry Fees
$3 - Individual events (Scrap Iron Toss, Ice Roping, Elk
Bugling Contest, Beard Contest, Chicken Race, Block Shoot)
$6 - Team events (Salad Toss, Sled Dog Race)
$5 - Elk Toss
The winner(s) of each event will
receive 50% of the total
entry fees collected (up to a maximum of $25 or another amount decided
by the officers). The
other remainder will go to the DGS to be donated to charity.
Scrap
Iron
Toss
Each participant gets one chance to throw a piece of scrap iron
at a 'target' from a specified distance away. If
the
entrant fails to hit the other piece
of scrap iron, they are out of the competition.
Those who do manage to hit the other piece of scrap iron
continue on to a second round, and so on. In
the
event that no competitors hit the
iron during a round, that round starts over. When
only
one
entrant remains, he/she is declared the champion.
Ice
Roping
The rules for Ice Roping cannot be summarized without
knowing the conditions of ice in the Susquehanna or other waterbody on
the day of the
competition.
Elk
Bugling Contest
Non-competitors will be selected at random to be the
judges. They will be blindfolded, and
the competitors will circle around the judges in no particular order.
The competitors will begin imitating an elk bugle, and the
judges will have
to walk towards the person that they feel has the best bugling
technique. No artificial bugling
devices are allowed.
Salad
Toss
Each two-member team gets a bowl of salad and the team
members stand a
specified distance apart. The first team
member tosses the salad (but not the bowl) to the other team member who
attempts to catch the flying salad.
After catching the salad, the second team member tosses the
salad back
to the first team member. After these
two tosses, the team with the most salad in their bowl will be declared
the
champion.
Sled
Dog Race
Each team gets a toboggan and a stuffed or real dog.
One team member gets on the sled with the dog while the other
pulls for a
specified
distance. The partners then switch
positions and return to the start.
Depending on the number of teams, a complicated bracket system
will be
established. The winning team will be
the one with the fastest time and who manages to get both team members
and the dog to the finish line first.
Elk Toss
The rules are simple.
Be the one who can toss the elk farther than everyone else and
you will
be the champion. Tossers cannot step over
the line (even after the elk is released), and measurements will be
made from the line to the farthest
point on
the elk from the line. All entrants will
get at least one chance to toss the elk, depending on the number of
participants. The competitors with the
longest tosses (number determined based
on
number of entrants) will continue on for a final toss.
The champion will be the person with the
longest toss of any toss.
Chicken Race
Chickens will be provided by the Wagners. Teams will select a
chicken. The team with the fastest chicken is the winner.
Block Shoot
During the course of the day, competitors will pay the entry fee and
sign their name in squares on the target. Once the squares are
filled, Van will shoot the target with a shotgun and judges will
determine the square with the most holes. The person who signed
that square will be the winner.
Beard Contest
The person (male or female) with the 'best' beard as selected by the
judges will be crowned the winner.
Artificial styling aids
are prohibited. These include moustache wax,
hair spray, hair creme, hair gel, styling foam, pomade, the stuff from
"Something About Mary", among others.
Note: All rules decisions will
be made by the DGS
officers. The officers reserve the right
to make rule changes at any time.
Remember, the events are for charity.
